Better sleep for the whole family

Sleep is central to our health but what is a ‘Healthy Night’s Sleep’? Let’s take a look and outline some tips to help get the most out of those nighttime hours.

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?

As an adult, our goal should be between 7-9 hours of SLEEP each night. The amount of time you are in bed is not important, it is the sleep.  For children the amount is up to 16 hours,  depending on their age.

DOES WHAT I DO BEFORE BED MATTER?

The simple answer is YES! Keep away from screens for an hour before you go to bed. Have an unwinding time to help you to fall asleep faster. This time could include reading, listening to music, or taking a bath.

ANY  TIPS FOR MY BEDROOM?

Make sure your room is dark and comfortable. It should be a space that you want to be in.

WHAT SUPPLEMENTS CAN HELP?

  • Lavender. Consider adding some drops to your bath or pillow.
  • Magnesium helps your muscles to relax. Consider adding Epsom salts to your bath
  • Chamomile tea can also help. Stick to one cup so that you are not waking to go to the toilet at night.

HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILDREN SLEEP BETTER?

The same things that will help you sleep, will help them. Consider reading to them before they go to bed, or having quiet playtime together to help them unwind from the day.

NIGHTTIME IS SLEEP TIME

Keep the bedroom as a space to relax in ie, not for work or study. If you cannot part with your phone make sure it is on flight mode.

FINALLY…

Try making one change and then gradually add some more. There is no substitute for sleep! A well-rested family helps to make a happy family!
